The Norwegian Public Roads Administration operates Eiksund tunnel. It was opened in February 23, 2008. According to records, more than 1000 vehicles are passing in there everyday. This is one thing that can make you deduce that it is indeed one of the busiest and most important tools that are used for transportation. This is something that should be expected because this bridge is serving for different municipalities in Norway including Heroy, Sande, Unlstein Hareid, Orsta and Volda. According to statistics, the total inhabitants of these municipalities are more than 40,000.
There are three lanes that are open for traffic everyday in the Eiksund tunnel. There are different types of vehicles that can be found travelling in the area and almost fifty percent of these cars are trucks. This would explain to us that it is indeed large enough to make sure that every type of car can pass by.
This is considered to be the tunnel with the lowest elevation of -287 meters. It is 7,765 meters long and 10 meters wide. The creation of the bridge was finished earlier and it was supposed to be opened in December 2007 but it was moved in 2008 because of some matters that caused the delay. Along with the building of the bridge, the Eiksind Bridge and the Helgehorn Tunnel were also being built. During the construction of Eiksund tunnel, the general contractor, which is Mesta, used the drill and blast method it.
After few years of use, it did not experience any of major damages. However, there is a recorded severe accident that happened in June 28, 2009 where five people died. Aside from that, there are no other major accidents that transpired in the deepest tunnel. With the help of this tunnel that has the planet’s deepest point at 287 meters below sea level, the different municipalities that it connects are able to travel in a shorter period of time. After all, this is the main reason why it is created. The building of Eiksund road tunnel may have been one of the most difficult because of the process included from the survey, injection and hole drilling, but it still served its purpose to connect and make travelling easier for people.
