The ocean is a part of the planet that is full of mystery. There are different points in the sea where you will find different things that are not present in majority of the spots in the entire body of water. In this section, you will find a presentation of the deepest water on earth. Many people, especially the divers are overwhelmed with the depth of this point in the ocean.

Mariana Trench or sometimes called as Marianas Trench is considered as the deepest part of the ocean, hence making it to be having the deepest water in the world as well. Unlike other parts of the sea, you will find this section as something that is truly impressive because of its depth. It is 2,500 kilometers long and it is 69 kilometers wide. You will find this in the western part of the Pacific Ocean. There are islands in the west part of this deepest point of the ocean and these are called the Mariana Islands.

Mariana Trench on the Map

Measuring the deepest part of the ocean is something that can sometimes be done unrepeated because it is not really that easy to do it. In the case of this particular trench, the deepest point that is measured was 11.03 kilometers deep was measured without repetition. The depth of this part of the ocean is not only affecting the pressure but it has also made the temperature very low. If you are going to stay and dive in the area, you will feel that the bottom temperature is 1-4 degrees Celsius. This is something that made some people think about the irony of the temperature and the depth. But there is nothing special about it. You might think that its depth made it very near to the center of the earth but that is not the case. According to experts, the earth is not a perfect sphere and some parts like the deep parts of it is not really placed need the center of the earth.

It has been long discovered during the Challenger expedition in 1875. During this activity, the people involved were able to record a depth of 8.184 km. The trench was first discovered with the use of sounding. There was another expedition, which was called Challenger II that was able to measure a depth that is 10,900 meters.

Survey in Mariana Trench

There are different expeditions that were done after the first one. In 2011, one of the latest and modernized ways of measuring the Mariana Trench was done. With this latest expedition, the American Geophysical Union and the people who were able to board the US Navy hydrographic ship that conducted the survey found out that there are four rocky parts that are believed to be seamounts.

A Closer Look in the Map

The depth of the Mariana Trench made it a possible site for the disposal of nuclear waste. But this thought could not be pushed because it is prohibited under the International Law to dump nuclear wastes in the ocean. And the different effects of the possible earthquakes can also be something that can produce unpredictable events that are not good for people.
