Longest Airport Runway in the World
The rising popularity of different aircraft the size of monster have led to the drastic change of airport runways in the past few years. Airports all over the world have modified their runways in order to accommodate these mammoth aircraft. An example of which is the Airbus A380 which houses up to several hundred people inside and with tons of weight. Most runways are made of asphalt while some are made of concrete. Asphalt and concrete are the main materials in creating runways since they do not make the surface of the runway slippery when wet and they rarely crack when exposed to intense heat.
While new airports are already designed to accommodate these huge aircrafts, current airports need to renovate and improve their runway as they try to find ways to extend their existing runways. With that comes the question, which has the longest runway ion the planet?
The World’s Longest Airport Runway
The Hamad International Airport currently holds the longest runway on earth especially in Western Asia. It has a runway of 17,700 feet long. The runway opened on December 12, 2012 while the second runway of the airport measured around 14,000 feet which is also one of the longest runway on the planet. The Hamad International Airport is the international facility in Doha, Qatar. Itwas supposed to open internationally in 2009 but due to cost delays and negotiations, itwill be fully functional in mid 2013. It is just a few kilometers away from the original which is the old Doha International Airport. Both runways are only two kilometers away from each other. This was designed so that both runways can accommodate landings and take-offs simultaneously.
Planning The Longest Airport Runway
It was on 2003 when the planning phase on building the airport with the longest runway came to fruition. Construction soon began on 2006 but was met with timely delays. Phase One and Two have already commenced and Phase Three would soon followed which is scheduled by 2015. Phase One and Two was once again faced with problems when it opened its doors to everyone with a soft opening on April 1, 2013. Its opening was cancelled just several hours before the soft launch and cited that there are safety issues with it that need to be reviewed to provide high quality service to its customers.
The initial phase of the construction was around 14.5 billion dollars and will have at least 28 million passengers yearly. Such numbers were an increase of ten million from the current Doha International airport which only has 18 million passengers in a yearly basis.
Now that the construction of the longest runway has been completed, scheduling its opening will soon happen and it will watch how man-made structures as magnificent as the Hamad International Airport’s runway has made innovations to travelling around the world while still maintaining safety as one of the topmost priority.
