Hockey is a team sport played by two teams of players that try to shoot a three inch diameter disc onto the opponent guarded goal. If a team gets the puck inside the goal, they score a point. Ice hockey was officially played in the year 1924 and in the 1920s Summer Olympics. It became the national sport in Latvia and the national winter sport in Canada.

There are numerous instances that the sport of hockey has broke records. One of which is having the longest matches ever in a sport. Hockey  is a very aggressive sport. This makes the team players even more aggressive in defending and making a point, making the matches longer and more thrilling. Aside from the suspenseful matches, the game itself has earned thousands or even millions of fans worldwide for having world records such as the longest games in the NHL history.

The longest game ever recorded in the history of NHL was when the Detroit Red Wings faced the Montreal Maroons in a semifinal match on March 24, 1936. It was when Mud Bruneteau’s goal in the sixth overtime period that gave the Detroit Red Wings the win for the first of the five semifinal matches. Later on, the Detroit Red Wings won the Stanley Cup. The record of the entire game was 116:30 of overtime. The goal came at around 16:30 into the sixth overtime match. The game was just short of three minutes and thirty seconds to make it last just like playing three consecutive games.

The Teams

Detroit Red Wings are the professional hockey team for Detroit, Michigan. They are one of the original NHL teams ever created along with the Toronto Maple Leafs, New York Rangers, Chicago Blackhawks, Boston Bruins, and Montreal Canadiens. The team has won the most Stanley Cup championships in the United States and are the third overall team in total championships just behind the Montreal Canadiens and the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Detroit Red Wings Logo 1936The Montreal Maroons were a professional hockey team for Canada. At first, the Montreal Canadiens served as the team representing the French Canadians. Soon, another team was created for the English Canadians and the Montreal Maroons were established. They won the Stanley Cup in 1926 and 1935. Eleven players from the team were elected to be in the Hockey Hall of Fame and five of the six coaches of the team were also honored.

It was on 1938 after the financial stress that the Great Depression happened that the team was suspended and were later disband. There were certain efforts to revive the team but the franchise was finally let go by 1947 when the Montreal Canadiens were picked to represent Montreal for the National Hockey League. The last active player for the Montreal Maroons was Herb Cain who remained in the NHL until 1946.
