Most Powerful Computer in the World
Computers are essential to today’s life. Most of the machines used today are run by computers. Traffic lights are run by computers. Most of the machines in the offices are run by computers. Even households have computers in them. Computers have become an integral part of our lives and it is here to stay. Not long ago, computers were very huge and that it would take single floor of a building to have a computer that would run like the household computer of today. It was not until in the 1980s that computers took a drastic change in size and power. Computers slowly become compact and portable and has become known as laptops. Although not as powerful as the desktop computer, laptops are portable computers. There are also some laptops that are even more powerful than the desktop computer you use today.
With that, computers run on different engines and operating systems. Some run at maximum speed and process data in an instant. These powerful computers help run different system. But, there is one computer that is powerful enough to process different data in a single second. Find out which is the most powerful computer in the world today.
The Tianhe-2 or TH-2 is a Chinese 33.86 petaflop supercomputer is the world’s most powerful and fastest computer. This is according to the TOP500 list for June 2013. The Tianhe-2 is located in the cyber capital of China in Guangzhou. Tianhe-2 was first initiated by the Chinese government in order to process different applications including national security applications. It was built by China’s National University of Defense Technology in Guangzhou city.
As of June 2013, the supercomputer is not yet fully operational but it has overcome the previous record of being the fastest and most powerful computer in the world. Tianhe-2 has reclaimed the title for China after Tianhe-1’s debut on November 2010. Tianhe-2 took Titan’s record as the world’s most powerful computer. Titan was built and housed in Orak Ridge National Laboratory in the US and has 17.59 petaflops.
Tianhe-2 is just one of the 66 supercomputers that are found in the 500 supercomputers in the world. These 66 supercomputers are found in China while the others are found elsewhere. After testing, the Tianhe-2 will be housed at the National Supercomputing Center in Guangzhou. The overall power of the Tianhe-2 has not even reached its maximum potential. Computer analysts have even predicted that once Tianhe-2 reaches its peak performance, the system will reach 54.9 petaflops and would consume around 17.6 megawatts of power while the external cooling system with require around 24 megawatts.
The computer would take up space of around 720 square meters. The Tianhe-2 runs on Kylin Linux operating system which was developed by the organization that built the supercomputer.
For now, the Tianhe-2 is still undergoing testing procedures in order for the computer to run smoothly. Even in its early stages, the Tianhe-2 has become very powerful and by the time it has reached its maximum capabilities, it will even surpass itself for being the most powerful computer in the world.
