She is known to being the oldest nurse because she has kept an active nursing license, 81 years. She is actually the oldest practicing nurse in Florida by around 9 years. Nellie explains that instead of returning to Pennsylvania after the war, her brother and her moved down to Florida and she fell in love with the people down there.

Nellie has impacted the life of the community tremendously. “Ms. Wade is the reason I stayed here,” as said by Dr. Barnes. For the last 15 years, she has been the person to deliver every baby in the northern portion of the county without a doctor. Now talk about being a super nurse! Many said that Nellie could outwork all of them in the area. Do you want to know her secret? These are the famous words of Nellie Wade herself, “Get up and go. You know, your head has a lot to do with it. You could get up and say I’m tired, I’m tired, but you don’t do that, you shouldn’t do that. The sun is shining out there, you want to be out in it!”
